2016 is our tenth anniversary year here at The Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden.
On Sunday 10th July, we’re holding an extra special birthday party here at Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden, Saumarez Park when our garden gates will be open to all, especially to those who haven’t yet seen the superb work of our volunteer gardeners over the last ten years.
This is a unique project in Guernsey and a great opportunity to see The Garden at her blooming best – a far cry from its near wasteland state, back in 2006. In the preceding years, greenhouses and original garden buildings had fallen down, doubtless leading the walled garden to become a dumping ground for other rubbish. In 2005 and upon the call of our President, Raymond Evison, a swarm of volunteers rallied to help; the restoration duly began in 2006. We have rebuilt three greenhouses, comprising nearly 200ft of glass and a garden laid out as closely as possible to the original scheme. The remaining building challenge is to construct a Gatehouse with a craft shop and educational facilities.
His Excellency, The Lieutenant Governor Vice Admiral Sir Ian Corder KBE, CB has graciously agreed to come and cut our 10th anniversary birthday cake at 3.15 pm to mark what has been accomplished in the last ten years. We hope to make it a real Garden Party with musical entertainment from Sammie Denning at 11.45 am and rousing shanties from GU10 at 2.00 pm. Meanwhile we will be attacking a Hog Roast and washing it down with Pimms and summer drinks for all.
In the meantime you can buy raffle tickets at the Bottle Stall, enjoy exploring the Gift Stall, visit our shop with its extraordinary range of items for sale, each one individually hand crafted by someone on the island, purchase plants, flowers and vegetables grown in the Garden, indulge in the most delicious cakes, view craft displays, spinning, kumihimo, patchwork, lace making, jewelry designing, knitting, painting and, if you are a child, take part in all sorts of art and craft challenges with something to take away. There will be a Treasure Hunt designed to test all members of the family working together.
Every penny spent will be your contribution to enable us to continue to meet the very considerable running costs of maintaining and completing the garden as it is. Any surplus would go towards funding the Gatehouse. Contrary to what many people think, we have no state funding and have to be entirely self supporting. Of course, one excellent way to support us would be to become a volunteer. We need a whole range of skills. You don’t have to be a gardener. The “swarm” in 2006 in the first superb burst of enthusiasm has reduced to a hard core of devoted people but we desperately want more to join this great venture. It is very rewarding to take some personal ownership of the Walled Garden and what it is increasingly able to offer to the community and visitors to the Island.
Please join us for a day full of special entertainment and fabulous food in a truly wonderful setting.
